Texture, in its intricate glory, serves as an integral facet of Sulafa's work. Here, she explores the unconventional and transformative role that texture can play in her work through the harmonious amalgamation of disparate mediums. In this series, she creates an imprint of crochet swatches onto clay, juxtaposing the tangible delicacy of crochet against the smooth solidity of the clay. This process of uniting two materials preserves the crochet process, allowing one to contemplate the remnant space created by the swatch’s absence.
This artistic exploration extends beyond experimentation. The crocheting process is an act of reconciliation of all the emotions the artist had experienced throughout the day. Although each crochet knot may appear the same, it is influenced by the unique emotion she experiences in that moment, and thus subtly altered in form. Contemplating the historic role of ceramics as a medium for memory and preservation, the clay is utilized to fossilize this intimate journey the crocheting process, unveiling the myriad of differences in pattern and texture of each knot. These clay pieces highlight the individuality of these precious emotions and the seemingly repetitive crochet knots created as a result.
